Years ago, a handmade card or #1 Dad keychain might have sufficed as Father’s Day gifts, but now that you’re a grownup, it’s time to put a little more effort into showing appreciation for your dad.
Some of the best Father’s Day gifts are those experiences you can share and reminisce about for years to come. So instead of getting Dad a tie this year, treat him to an experience he won’t forget. Check out these 5 great ways to celebrate Father’s Day in San Diego
- Father’s Day BBQ and concert featuring Gary Sinise & The Lt. Dan Band
Whether your dad is a huge Forrest Gump fan or simply a fan of good food and great tunes, he’ll get a kick out of actor Gary Sinise’s band covering hits from Bruno Mars, The Police, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and more. The annual concert and BBQ takes place on the beach at the Hotel del Coronado, and if you really want to impress Dad, spring for the VIP tickets that include a special reception and meetandgreet photo opportunity with Lt. Dan himself.
- Father’s Day sail on the Californian
The Maritime Museum of San Diego is hosting a special Father’s Day sail on the Californian, a goldrush era cutter that’s remarkably still seaworthy. The three-hour trip through the calm waters of the San Diego bay includes a delicious bratwurst sandwich, chips, and a cold beer prior to sailing, plus a souvenir photo and the opportunity to work the lines and handle the sails.
- The San Diego International Boat Show
If your dad is into more modern boats, he’ll love perusing the powerboats, sailboats and luxurious yachts at the annual San Diego International Boat Show, which runs all of Father’s Day weekend at Spanish Landing Park. You and Pops can also try standup paddle boarding and kayaking, and fill up on food available from popular San Diego food trucks. The event features live entertainment and a floating Tiki Bar.
- Cinema Under the Stars: Raiders of the Lost Ark
You might have been too young to watch the first Indiana Jones movie when it hit theaters in 1981, so here’s a chance to see everyone’s favorite whipcracking adventurer/professor on the big screen. Cinema Under the Stars, an intimate outdoor movie theater in Mission Hills, provides heaters and blankets to keep warm against the harbor chill, as well as popcorn, candy and hot and cold drinks for sale. If you bring Dad to the Father’s Day showing, don’t forget to BYOF (bring your own fedora).
- Private brewery tour
San Diego has quickly gained a reputation for offering some of the best craft brews in the country, and tours are available at a wide range of breweries—from major operations like Stone and Ballast Point to microbreweries like Mike Hess and Mother Earth. Group tours can be fun, but if you want to keep Dad all to yourself, you can opt for one of the many private brewery tour packages available.
Father’s Day gifts that are two gifts in one
Experience gifts are a great opportunity for bonding and making memories, but if you still want to get your dad something for Father’s Day that he can hold in his hand, check out the selection of personalized Bullet Bottle Openers, Six Shooter Shot Glasses, and other customizable barware at Bullets2Bandages. Anything you buy from us is two gifts in one because we donate 15% of our annual profits to veterans’ charities.
So while your gift to Dad is a symbol of appreciation for him, you’re also honoring countless dads who are veterans as well.
